Becoming a Mentor

           Five months ago, I returned from my service trip to Nicaragua with Children’s Global Alliance. I continue to be impacted and influenced by the experiences I had while assisting the students in Escuela Especial. I found a new respect and passion for individuals with disabilities and I've become involved in Battle Mountain's special education department!

            I began my high school career as a much more grounded individual. I found the capability to prioritize myself and I became more responsible with my time, all thanks to the lessons I learned while in Nicaragua. The memories of the beautiful students, teachers, and the Nicaraguan culture carried me through my daily routines. Each night, their laughter peppered my dreams as I remembered the youthful, exciting dances I shared with the students, specifically, Maura, Erickson, and Conchita.

            In early October, I was informed that I was eligible for the role as a student mentor through Children's Global Alliance. I was thrilled to apply, hoping that I would be chosen as a mentor, a very prestigious role. After being selected as one of the four finalists, all in which were amazing candidates, I interviewed with the founder, Ms. Lisa Marie Howell, and former English teacher and chaperone, Ms. Gutmann. After, I received the role as a student mentor. Fortunately, the other three candidates were also chosen as student mentors!

            I, along with a team of eight student volunteers and two chaperones, will travel half way across the world in order to volunteer in the orphanages of Cambodia. As a student mentor, I will have the chance to assists in leading this team of incredible volunteers, where I will also have the opportunity to change the lives of many Cambodian Orphans. Children's Global Alliance will allow my team and me to witness Cambodia's terrible past and intriguing culture.

        As I embark on my next journey in my life, I confidently state that I am honored to be a student mentor and I have the greatest hopes for this service trip. Nicaragua has surely changed my life, and I am excited to see the amazing culture and orphans though my travels to Cambodia!
